NATIONAL GALLERY — ALEXANDROS SOUTZOS MUSEUM

PERMANENT COLLECTIONS: GREEK PAINTING 1600–2000

The permanent exhibition at the National Gallery Annex in Corfu, launched in summer 2007, unfolds the history of Modern Greek painting from early post-Byzantine times up to the contemporary works of the last decade.

Of the 150 major works selected from the collections of the National Gallery some are presented for the first time. Visitors to the museum will see the evolution of Modern Greek painting in an accessible and meaningful manner allowing them to discover the affinities, connections, and ruptures between different historical periods.

On display in the three floors of the historic building are some of the most crucial examples of the themes and diverse pictorial styles which mark Modern Greek painting. Corfu’s history and its lyrical and poetic nature meet humans, their reflections and creations. The museum thus becomes part of the great intellectual traditions of the island and the contribution of its scholars and artists.

The exhibition aims to serve as a teaching tool for schools and the university. A permanent collection provides the opportunity and time for teachers, professors and museum educators to organise multiple visits and study different periods, styles, and artists.

In this context daily educational programs for all levels of education aim to expose children to the themes, materials, and artists of the museum galleries, familiarizing them with the trends of Modern Greek art and encouraging their active participation, observation, and discussion stimulated by the works. The aim is for visits to the museum and the subsequent creative activities to be a constructive experience.

Through cultural events, lectures, day conferences, temporary exhibitions, meetings with entities and organisations in Corfu, the National Gallery Annex seeks to become a meeting place for creative reflection and aesthetic enjoyment for both residents of and visitors to the island.
